It’s been a while since i did a review of just some of the random songs that flow through EvilSponge. Here are some of the best of the massive number of random tracks we get sent for download.

Alan Watts:
  Lee's Child
This is actually a band named after Zen master Alan Watts. I say that because I downloaded the track and copied it to my phone, and then I was looking through the songs for something to listen to and came across this track. I remember thinking, “When did i download a lecture from him?” Not being in the mood for a dharma talk, i skipped this track for a while until realizing my mistake. The band makes nicely noisy pop with vaguely goth female vocals. I like the beat here in this generally catchy tune.

Baby Baby:

$
Baby Baby are a band from Carrollton, GA. For those of you not in this state, Carrollton is the home of West Georgia University, where Newt Gingrich taught. It is a smallish town about an hour or so west of Atlanta and i really don’t know much about it. However, this band is pretty damned cool. The music is fast and loud, multiple voices kind of yelling / chanting along over deeply fuzzy guitars and thunderous drums. It is spastic and messy and great fun. It seems to capture that same carefree, reckless spirit that TV On the Radio had on their first few releases. I am very curious to see where this band goes.

Doldroms:

Egypt
This is a fun electro tune, vaguely in the spirit of Four Tet. There are strange beats that clatter, keys that ebb and flow, and a high-pitched voice that wails over it all. At first i thought the singer was female, but according to the press material it is Montrealian male Airick Woodhead. Huh. I think his singing must be a little computer manipulated... But no matter. This songs clips along at a good pace.

Kiki Pau:

Tomto Mars
Kiki Pau are a 4-pierce post-rock band from Finland. This tune clocks in at 8:32, and has a really nice old fashioned, drugged out, psychedelic feel. The band is in no hurry, so they take their time, letting odd percussion clatter for half a minute, then letting the bass rumble while the drums slowly build. Reference points are Velvet Underground and early Spaceman3, although the basswork reminds me of Grimble Grumble, with that groove that never stops. If you like this kind of stuff, this is a great track.

Lightning Love:

Deadbeat
This is a happy synthpop tune with soaring synths, a loud clear female voice, and a monotonous beat. It grinds along nicely.

Little Gold:

Sisters and Friends
This is a fun noise pop tune. The vocals are distorted and buried under a whiny overdriven guitar. This could be a Dinosaur Jr. tune. Fun, if you like that sort of thing.

Maitland:

Drop Down
This is nice, epic lo-fi pop tune, with hints of folk in the strummed guitar, light drumming, and rich male vocals. I really like the way the drums are a minimal clicking behind the louder acoustic guitar. Towards the end, the two band members harmonize in a way that reminds me of Snowden, that kind of rich natural hint of tremolo. Well done.

The Morning Clouds:
  A Walk Home
This is a pleasant pop tune buried under layers of echo. The voice is a lethargic drawl, the drums a slight hit in the background under layers of keys and chiming guitar. As the song goes along, it swells into a noisy SIANspheric-like cacophony.

Tracy Shedd:
  Encourage Me
This is a pleasant little pop song, with Ms. Shedd's voice over a guitar tremoloed all to hell and back. Eventually she adds in a rolling piano riff and some tinkling drumming. It's pleasant, but has a very good rolling beat.

Witches:
  Creature of Nature
Witches are a trio from Athens, GA. Or maybe that should be "were a trio", as internet information is unclear on whether or not the band has broken up or lead vocalist Cara Beth just has a side project. At any rate, this band makes jangly old school pop very within the Athenian tradition. Beth has a nice voice, and she knows how to emote, wailing it out in this tune about a dog, belting it over nice layers of guitar. This is a fun tune.
